Big Grant win for Port Tennis club
as reported on The Newsport daily

Port Douglas Tennis Club was thrilled to hear last week that they will be granted $34,500 via the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

Secretary of the Club, Mark Fellows said, "We have been wanting to upgrade our clubrooms and buy new equipment such as nets, a ball machine and a stringing machine for a long time. This funding allows us to undertake these projects and enhance the services we offer our members and visitors. We will also add a safe play area for kids to enjoy while their parents are playing tennis and will add some much needed new balls and racquets."

The Port Douglas Tennis Club celebrated its 10 year anniversary this year and now has a strong membership of about 85 locals. It provides services to locals and tourists and has an estimated 2000 people using its facilities every year.

"With this huge throughput, the Club's facilities have been slowly declining, the clubrooms have become too small and the equipment is deteriorating. more . . .

Novice/Intermediate section

Mitchell/Grant Knight won to make it  two years in a row. In the final against Fleur/Herold Prins Mitchell and Fleur had to handle the power of Grant and Herold. Mitchell was able to be a fraction more consistent than Fleur and this greatly helped his team to a tight victory.

Inter/Adv section

Aresh Ghafari/Jan Weidner won this section after being down two match points against Jack/Marcus Anderson. Aresh/Jan were winning quite easily but let it slip and they lost the second set and came within one point of losing the match . Aresh/Jan won the first set, lost the second set in a close tie/breaker and won the third set in another close  tie-breaker. Had they lost  there would have been a three way tie for first. However they managed to hold on in a nail biting finish.

Novice section

In this section Jack/Barry Karamujic and Karen/Pam Williams were completely tied down to matches won/lost and games for/against. The winner had to be decided by coin toss.
